WELCOME

OPENING PRAYER

Holy God, Three-in-One,
from the communion of your being,
love overflowed,
endowing us with your image
and calling us into community.
Help us to listen for your word
that our lives may be ordered
by your peace alone;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP

How majestic is our God! How worthy of our worship and praise!
When we stand in awe of our Creator, marveling at the heavens, the moon and the stars, we ask, “What are we that you are mindful of us? Who are we that you care for us?”
How majestic is our God! How worthy of our worship and praise!

*HYMN No.  301 “Let Us Build A House”

1 Let us build a house where love can dwell
and all can safely live,
a place where saints and children tell
how hearts learn to forgive.
Built of hopes and dreams and visions,
rock of faith and vault of grace;
here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

Refrain:
all are welcome; all are welcome; all are welcome in this place.

2 Let us build a house where prophets speak,
and words are strong and true,
where all God’s children dare to seek
to dream God’s reign anew.
Here the cross shall stand as witness
and as symbol of God’s grace;
here as one we claim the faith of Jesus: (Refrain)

3 Let us build a house where love is found
in water, wine, and wheat;
a banquet hall on holy ground
where peace and justice meet.
Here the love of God, through Jesus,
is revealed in time and space;
as we share in Christ the feast that frees us: (Refrain)

4 Let us build a house where hands will reach
beyond the wood and stone
to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,
and live the Word they’ve known.
Here the outcast and the stranger
bear the image of God’s face;
let us bring an end to fear and danger: (Refrain)

Let us build a house where all are named,
their songs and visions heard
and loved and treasured,
taught and claimed as words within the Word.
Built of tears and cries and laughter,
prayers of faith and songs of grace;
let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: (Refrain)

*CALL TO CONFESSION

In the name of the Triune God, we gather for worship. Let us confess the sin that turns us from our Creator.

*PRAYER FOR CONFESSION

Spirit of the Living God, you call us to spread the good news, to live the gospel, to teach Jesus’ way to future generations. But we skirt our responsibilities and fail to act on your Great Commission. Forgive our silence. Forgive our apathy. Forgive our lack of fire. Help us be bold in faith, loving the world as Christ loves and embodying our Savior’s church. Amen.

*SILENT PRAYER FOR CONFESSION

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we are forgiven and freed. Claim your forgiveness. Rejoice in God’s grace. Respond with love. Amen.

*RESPONSE No. 288 “Spirit of the Living God” (sing 3 Xs)

Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.
Melt me; mold me;
fill me; use me.
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Our peace comes from knowing how much God loves us in Jesus Christ. With God’s help, we try to love and forgive one another as Christ loves and forgives us.
“The peace of Christ be with you,”
“And also with you.”

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

UNISON PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION

Open our hearts and minds by the power of your Spirit, Holy God, that we might hear and receive the message you intend for us today. Amen.

UNISON SCRIPTURE Matthew 28:16-20

16-17 Meanwhile, the eleven disciples were on their way to Galilee, headed for the mountain Jesus had set for their reunion. The moment they saw him they worshiped him. Some, though, held back, not sure about worship, about risking themselves totally.

18-20 Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.

SERMON “This Way of Life”

Commentary and Liturgy from the Book of Common Worship(PCUSA), Elizabeth Lovell Milford, Teri McDowell Ott,

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH                        Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand
of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN No. 518 “Your Only Son”

1 Your only Son, no sin to hide,
but you have sent him from your side
to walk upon this guilty sod,
and to become the Lamb of God.

Refrain:
O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,
I love the holy Lamb of God!
O wash me in his precious blood,
my Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

2 Your gift of love, we crucified;
we laughed and scorned him as he died;
the humble King we named a fraud
and sacrificed the Lamb of God. (Refrain)

3 I was so lost, I should have died,
but you have brought me to your side
to be led by your staff and rod,
and to be called a lamb of God. (Refrain)

*HYMN No. 69 “I, The Lord of Sea and Sky”

1 I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I, who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Refrain:
Here I am, Lord.
Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

2 I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them.
Whom shall I send?
(Refrain)

3 I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?
(Refrain)
